Synopsis
In Denver, Colorado, BEN kicks MONA’s gun out of her hand right before she executes two leaders of a corporate middle management team turned religious cult.
As they leave the corporate offices, Ben greets the responding police officers, but Mona’s furious. He convinces her to get coffee and donuts where they discuss the case they’ve just solved and the case before where, by creating a deep fake video of THEO and JED, of Christ Life of Idaho, in a sexual relationship, Ben and Mona convinced them to quit laundering money to fund white supremacist groups. Mona also tried to execute those two suspects. Ben decides they need to find a new case that will test Mona but also help her learn to control her murderous impulses.
Theo and Jed, who’ve been tracking Mona, watch Ben and Mona leave the donut shop.
Later that night, two members of the Wall of Fat Dads, JERRY and DEREK, meet with their friend, RONNIE, to decide if he should join their group. While working underneath his truck, Ronnie admits that he’s a little behind on his child support. Jerry puts the truck in neutral, releases the clutch and parking brake, and lets the truck roll onto Ronnie, killing him. Derek is aghast at Jerry’s decision but leaves with him anyway.
The next morning at Ben’s and Madame Bloodstone’s, Ben calls his brother, BRYCE, who’s hiking through the San Juan skyway, to ask Bryce if he has any ideas on a new pro bono case for Mona. Neither has any good ideas.
Ben eats breakfast with Bloodstone, who isn’t concerned about Mona’s blood lust as long as Mona keeps making payments on Ben’s business.
Over lunch at a restaurant, Ben tells Mona he wants them to work on making sure deadbeat dads make child support and alimony payments as Ben thinks it will be tough work but also reinforce that even deadbeats should be served justice and not just killed. Wanting to work mysterious deaths ruled accidents instead, Mona rejects the idea until Ben tells her he’ll knock off an entire payment on his business if she’ll do it.
At the Dadvenger’s Law Office, HATHCOCK, waiting to meet with The Honorable to discuss his pending divorce, watches a commercial for the Dadvengers in the lobby. BERT, the office manager, then flirts with Hathcock, even though he thinks she looks too much like his soon-to-be ex-wife. Bert explains that part of her role is to remind every client of his ex-wife. She offers him some revenge intimacy, which he rejects, and they discuss how he was the unfaithful partner in his marriage.
The Honorable bumbles out and has Hathcock come into his office Bert follows to take notes. Hathcock is disappointed RANDY FUTURES, the sexy Dadvengers, isn’t going to represent him. The Honorable flirts with Hathcock but then convinces him of The Honorable’s successful record handling cases like Hathcock’s. They devise a plan to make Hathcock look like a loser, including having him gain weight to look more empathetic to the judge.
Returning to her desk, Bert finds a distraught woman, demanding to meet with The Honorable, her ex-husband’s lawyer, to get her ex-husband to pay her his back child support. Bert offers her a card with only a phone number on it, telling the woman the people she’ll call will get her ninety percent of what she’s owed.
At a softball tournament, the Wall of Fat Dads, MARK, BRENT, Jerry, and Derek, watch out for deadbeats they call pre-leeches or leeches, out-of-work men who scope for divorced women to live off of. They see one, CHRIS, who is targeting RACHEL, a softball coach. Jerry and Derek follow him into the restroom to intimidate him.
There, they tell Chris what they do, including a story of how they tracked down Rachel’s ex-husband all the way to Kentucky, roughed him up, and got him to pay the child support and alimony he owed her. They then warn Chris off Rachel.
That night, Derek returns to his squalid apartment and calls his ex-wife to tell her he’s lost his job and to share his concern about how violent the Wall of Fat Dads is getting.
Picking up her new furniture at a delivery warehouse, Mona talks with SEAN, the inventory manager about why she’s moved to Denver from Tulsa. She mentions working on cases where deadbeat dads get roughed up for not paying their child support. Sean calls a co-worker, CLIFF, over as Cliff’s been dating a guy who just got roughed up for not paying his child support.
Brent and Bert have Mark over for dinner, where they discuss their concern about Derek getting too soft for their work and that Derek’s just lost his job. Mark cautions Bert to take it easy on her escapades from her open relationship with Brent as the openness is really one-sided. Bert tells Mark she encourages Brent to be just as open, but that Brent isn’t comfortable with it.
Working a lead Ben’s given her, Mona meets with Rachel and Chris. Chris tells Mona about the Wall of Fat Dads threatening him. Rachel tells her about how Rachel’s ex-husband got beaten up by men sounding like those who threatened Chris. Mona sees the men’s point. Chris is mooching off Rachel, being jobless and living with her.
Derek and Jerry stake-out a deadbeat from the woman Bert met with at the Dadvenger’s office. Before they force their way into the deadbeat’s apartment, Jerry gives Derek the idea of hitting up daycare centers for workers in need of affection. Jerry also tells Derek they’re getting concerned about Derek being jobless. Jerry warns Derek that the daycare scheme only works with directors and that most of the other women work there for the discounts on daycare for their kids and are usually saddled with their own deadbeats.
Derek and Jerry watch a woman leave the apartment they’re staking out and make their move. When they knock, their target, CALAEB, tells them to go away, so Jerry busts through the front door. Caleb, who’s crying over just getting dumped and watching porn, catches himself in his zipper as Derek and Jerry barge in. Assessing the situation, Jerry rips Caleb free from his zipper, they revive him and drag him out of his apartment to hit up cash machines for the money Derek and Jerry are after.
The next day at the Dadvenger’s Law Office, Freedom Eagle tells Bert she needs to develop diversity teams for the Wall of Fat Dads as he knows the original team avoids leaning on deadbeats from other ethnicities because of the threat of hate crime prosecution. Thinking about how she brought the original team together through her open relationship with Brent, Bert isn’t enthusiastic about finding new Fat Dads. Freedom Eagle hands her a list of former divorcee clients and, embarrassed that Freedom Eagle knows her secrets, she recognizes some names.
Taking Jerry’s advice, Derek visits a new daycare under the guise of considering moving one of his kids to it. He meets KARLY, a very attractive daycare worker, who scheduled the appointment with him. But Karly’s boss reminds them they can’t give tours during regular business hours. Derek, very drawn to Karly, agrees to come back later in the evening.
Mona meets with LINDA, Ronnie’s ex-wife, investigating one of her suspicious accidental deaths. Ronnie is the man Jerry killed earlier. Linda tells Mona how she found Ronnie under his truck the next day after the neighbors called her, but that the neighbors only saw two middle-aged men meeting with Ronnie and heard no commotion or violence.
The following day, after taking notes from Freedom Eagle meeting with one of his emasculated clients, Bert tells Freedom Eagle she’s meeting with a new Fat Dad prospect from his list.
At a bar, Mona meets the furniture warehouse worker, Cliff, and his boyfriend, Tony, who’s been threatened by a group of men for being late on his child support and alimony. They’ve told Tony they’ll come back to kill him and make it look like an accident to trigger court-order life insurance benefits to his ex-wife. Tony also tells Mona there’s an online support group on one of the dark web “chan” sites for deadbeats getting harassed by vigilantes.
Theo and Jed attack Mona when she returns to her apartment. She’s able to fight them off, driving her heel into Jed’s foot and tearing off Theo’s ear before pulling her gun and shooting them point blank in the face.
Sparks fly as Derek tours the daycare with Karly. They agree to have dinner together and their mutual attraction crescendos with sex at Derek’s place.
Ben and Bloodstone help Mona dispose of Theo and Jed at her apartment. Bloodstone now realizes Ben’s concern about Mona’s effortless ability to kill, but she also sympathizes with Mona, who has a long history of being attacked working cases. Bloodstone can see the death haunting Mona’s aura.
ROLAND, a former Dadvenger client, catches up with Bert at a restaurant. He mentions being attracted to Lady Justice over Randy Futures. Bert makes him an offer to join the Wall of Fat Dads, sealing the deal by giving Roland head in his truck.
Driving deep into the mountains that night, Brent and Mark in one truck and Derek and Jerry in another, Derek shares details of his successful daycare conquest with Jerry. Jerry uses Derek’s story to torment their tied and bound captive deadbeat in the back of their dual cab. Brent and Mark discuss Brent’s feelings about Bert recruiting new Fat Dad team members. Mark encourages Brent to take more advantage of his open marriage with Bert, but Brent can bring himself to. They also share their concern about Derek becoming a weaker and weaker Fat Dad.
The four stop at a steep turn along the gravel road, pull out their captive deadbeat, place him under one of the truck’s jacked wheels, then hammer away the jack, crushing his head and chest. Derek refuses to help.
Reviewing photos of accidental death scenes at a local police department, Mona discovers the previous scene from the Fat Dad’s murder victim, now ruled an accident.
While Sean and his furniture workers deliver new furniture to Mona’s apartment, Mona calls Ben to update him on what’s she’s uncovered. Ben doesn’t believe these mounting accidental deaths are suspicious and tells Mona to keep working the deadbeat dad cases. Sean picks up on Mona’s frustration and he hangs around after his workers leave. Mona asks him if he wants to have casual sex. Sean agrees. They spend the rest of the day together talking about how dark Mona is. Sean suggests she doesn’t have to be so tough and rigid all the time.
The Wall of Fat Dads train Roland, roughing up a deadbeat in an alley, another behind a warehouse. Roland collects on his deal-sweetener with Bert. Derek and Karly cuddle after sex. The Wall of Fat Dads dispose of a deadbeat restaurant manager by locking him into the restaurant’s walk-in freezer. Hot on their trail, Mona speaks with the responding officer at the restaurant. The Wall of Fat Dads and Roland drag another deadbeat through a warehouse and throw him into a baler to crush him to death. Brent delivers cash to a deadbeat’s ex-wife. She invites him into her house. During a softball game, Mark hands Roland his cut for their work. Derek moves in with Karly. Mona follows up with the dead beat’s ex-wife who’s just met with Brent, but the ex-wife doesn’t give Mona any information.
Ben picks up Bryce from the airport. When they arrive at Ben’s, they head to the basement, where they discuss how they’re coping with the Gracefield 14 case. Ben admits the cases he’s taken with Mona since haven’t helped him get over that terrible case, including The Dog Killers of Summit County case, where Ben got hit in the arm during a shootout with a crazed lady, another politically charged cases where a couple killed a man for reporting their kid for playing baseball in the wrong age bracket, where Ben had to keep Mona from killing the couple, and the most recent, involving the corporate middle management religious cult.
Meanwhile, Mona arrives, but Bloodstone insists Mona have tea with her before heading down to meet with Ben and Bryce. Bloodstone tells Mona the history of the Gracefield 14 case where domestic terrorists killed 14 city officials including Ben’s and Bryce’s sister, Bonnie, the city attorney. Ben and Bryce extracted gruesome revenge on the assassins, which tarnished their souls. She warns Mona against further killing to preserve hers.
Swimming in self-reflection, Mona joins Ben and Bryce where Bryce is investigating dark web chan posts warning against anti-deadbeat vigilantes to create a local victim list. Ben wants to have the local police run the list against their reported crime logs. Mona thinks they may uncover the connection between her suspicious accidental death investigations and the vigilantes, but Ben dismisses her theory again.
Mark, Brent, Jerry, and Derek feast on steaks to celebrate their success with Roland and his sons forming a new Fat Dads team. While they drug Derek’s drink, they reveal to him they know about him turning full leech, bring jobless and moving in with Karly. Trying to get away from Mark, Brent, and Jerry, Derek falls into the pool and struggles to swim. Jerry climbs into the pool to finish disposing of Derek.
The next morning, Ben and Mona meet the local police to have them compare their local victims to the police’s reported crimes.
Bert meets Lady Justice, who wants to meet the new team of Fat Dads. Bert reveals the leader to be Roland and tells Lady Justice he had the hots for her when she represented him in his divorce. Lady Justice is more than flattered and asks Bert to schedule time for her and Roland.
At the police station, the detective who met Ben and Mona learns of a new accidental drowning case where the ex-wife insists her ex-husband was murdered and that he was part of a group calling themselves The Wall of Fat Dads. The police make fun of the name then call Ben with the lead.
Bryce locates The Wall of Fat Dads social media page. Through facial recognition, Bryce connects Bert from a picture with the Fat Dads to her professional social media page connecting her to the Dadvenger’s Law Firm. Ben and Mona get the possible connection. They decide to have Bryce interview Derek’s ex-wife Diane, while Ben and Mona head to the Dadvenger’s office to see what they can turn up.
On the way, Bryce calls from Diane’s house, confirming their suspicions on the connection between the Fat Dads and the Dadvengers, warning Ben and Mona to be careful. Mona celebrates being right all along and shames Ben for not believing her.
Outside the Dadvengers’ office, Ben hands Mona her gun but cautions her to think of it only as a last resort.
Inside, they introduce themselves to Bert, who grows worried. Ben and Mona ask to meet with any of the Dadvengers who might be there. Bert rounds up Freedom Eagle, The Honorable, and The Gaveler before calling Brent to come to the office right away.
In the conference room, Mona makes fun of the attorneys wearing their cosplay outfits before questioning them about their connection to the Fat Dads. The Dadvengers deny knowing the Fat Dads until Mona reveals they know Bert is married to one of the Fat Dads. The Gaveler tries to bolt from the room, but Mona catches him, wrestles him down, and zip-ties him. Ben then zip-ties Freedom Eagle and The Honorable.
Having sex in her office in their cosplay outfits, Lady Justice and Roland hear the commotion. She wants him to check it out, but he wants to finish first. Lady Justice is insistent.
Angered, Roland bursts into the conference room, pinning Mona between the door and the wall, announcing himself as Hung Jury. Mona squirms out and levels her gun at Roland. Lady Justice flies into the room, begging no one to shoot, pinning Mona between the door and the wall again. Quick to recover, Mona bashes her gun against Lady Justice’s head, knocking her out. Roland tackles Mona. Ben wrestles Roland down. Ben is faster back to his feet and shoots Roland in the arm.
The Dadvengers lose hope of rescue. Mona begs Ben to let her take out at least one of the Dadvengers, namely The Gaveler, but Ben sends her back to the office to bring Bert to the conference room.
Before Mona can find Bert, Brent and Mark race into the Dadvengers’ office. Bert jumps up from behind her desk, where Mona grabs her, puts her gun to Bert’s head and forces Mark and Brent to join everyone in the conference room.
Mark and Brent take immediate stock of the situation. Mark starts to explain the Wall of Fat Dad’s intentions, but Mona isn’t interested in hearing his story.
Bert winks to Brent then throws her elbow into Mona just as Brent lunges across the conference table for Mona. Mona shoots Brent in the gut then shoots Bert in the shoulder. Before anyone can react, she also shoots Mark in the chest.
Outside, Randy Futures, returning to the office, hears the shots and runs away, terrified but as though she always expected something like this to happen.
In the conference room, Ben yells at Mona for shooting Mark, Brent, and Bert until they begin to moan. Mona checks her gun and discovers Ben’s loaded it with rubber bullets.
Realizing he’s the only one to be shot with live ammunition, Roland gripes about how only the black man actually took a bullet.
Later, at a bar, Ben and Mona talk over the case and decide, if Mona can stay on a less violent path, to become true partners instead of the seller and buyer of the private investigations business. Mona gets up to follow someone out of the bar.
Catching up to Jerry outside, she hammers the back of his head with her gun then zip-ties him.
Ben walks up to inspect her work, asking her if that was so hard verses just killing Jerry.
